Before I had permission to record Phil via soundboard,
I used to sneak in with a cassette recorder. In 1977 I was 24 and poor, so I didn't always have the best equipment nor could I afford the best quality tapes. I did do my best with what I could afford. I recorded several of the Phil Keaggy Band concerts during 1977. Represented here are some special moments (to me) for the past 42 years. (Note - I did not record the Springfield, Ohio concert, but am forever grateful to whoever was able to record this concert.)
So, today we are spoiled by the amazing quality we can get when
recording with our phones, but 40 years ago we hadn't even thought
of something like that.
These clips vary in quality from Okay to Pretty Good under the circumstances, but there is NO ESCAPING the wonderful performances. The band was on the road constantly, and they were growing musically by leaps and bounds. I could have given you another hour of just jams from TIME and TAKE ME CLOSER, but what is Nirvana for me could well be overkill for some listeners.
Some of these versions are not as clean as I would have wanted, but you can add a bit of EQ and they are certainly worth the time to enjoy. Your ears will settle in if you simply kick back and enjoy.
One final note is that sadly guitarist and vocalist Lynn Nichols is constantly buried in the mix. I know this has to frustrate him as he played some wonderful solos, both electric and acoustic. There was nothing I could do to bring him out with the EQ I applied.
Many thanks to Phil and the Band, and to my friend Tom Gulotta for giving me the Okay to throw this onto the Freebee Table in the Garage. To me personally, this is a band growing musically and spiritually, and I would take this download as fast as any of the high quality!
Enjoy and Let the band lift you up!!
